How to Create a Wake Up Routine

“Jump out of bed”, “wake up on the right side of the bed”, “get off on the right foot”. Whatever expression you want to use, creating a wake up routine that you can stick to will make your days go so much more smoothly.

I am not a morning person. It’s not that I’m in a bad mood upon waking (I’m actually annoyingly chipper), it’s just that my bed is so comfortable! Why would I ever want to leave it?

In my mind, nothing beats sleeping in – and trust me I do it often! But I have a few tricks up my sleeve to get my ass out of bed in the morning. It’s all about having the right motivation… and a great night of sleep doesn’t hurt.

How to create a wake up routine that makes you want to jump out of bed

Get the temperature right

A programmable thermostat is a great investment. Set it low for sleeping (somewhere around 65 degrees Fahrenheit) and program it to go up to a normal temp about an hour before you need to get up. I sleep under a weighted blanket and duvet and setting our thermostat to 67 degrees is perfect. When it automatically goes up to 72 degrees, it doesn’t hurt so much to throw off the covers and hit the floor.

Prep a delicious breakfast

Eating breakfast within an hour of waking up is super important. It gives you the energy you need to start your day and helps you maintain focus until lunch. Having breakfast ready to go beforehand will not only make it easier to stick to eating breakfast, but give you something to look forward to. Try these easy mini frittatas

Drink water first

Put a glass of water next to your bed and drink it as soon as you wake up. Water is energizing. It also helps you digest food and absorb nutrients. I fill a yeti with ice water so it’s still nice and cold in the morning. Plus if you’re trying to increase the amount of water you drink every day, you just checked off your first glass!

Plan your morning the night before

Figuring out what needs to be done in the morning the day before helps you sleep better because you’re removing the to-do list from your mind and putting it on paper (or wherever you choose to track your tasks). You should also add things to your list that you look forward to. Rather than just a list of to-dos, add in things like “have coffee on the back deck” or “listen to the new episode of my favorite podcast while I get ready”.

Create a relaxing bedtime routine

Feeling relaxed before bed helps you get a better night of sleep.

Set your alarm to a playlist

What are your favorite songs to dance to or sing along with? Why not wake up to them every day? If you have an android, you can link the Google clock app with Spotify and set your alarm to automatically play your personalized playlist when it’s time to wake up. On iPhones you can select a song from Apple Music to play as your alarm tone, but if you have a Spotify premium account, you can download an app like “Morning Alarm for Spotify” to get the same experience as android users.

These are just a few ideas I use in my wake up routine. Think about what would make your life easier and what you look forward to each day and add those things to create your own wake up routine.
