Welcome email sequence

How to Write a Welcome Email Sequence

You’ve created a great freebie, a landing page to sign up, and an email that will deliver the freebie… but now what?

Don’t just drop your freebie and ghost!

This is your chance to warm up your new subscriber… SO THEY BECOME A CLIENT

The best way to do this is by creating an automated welcome email sequence that allows your subscribers to get to know you and opens up two-way communication.

So what goes into a welcome email sequence?

A good welcome sequence includes the following emails to warm up your new subscribers:

  1. Delivery of freebie (immediately)
  2. Value (2-3 days later)
  3. About me (2-3 days later)
  4. Value (2-3 days later)
  5. Offer (5 days later)

How many emails and when to send are up to you, but I recommend sending at least 3 emails to warm up your new subscribers before sending an official offer to work with you.

If you want to skip the “about me” email, make sure you add it to email 1 or 2. Who you are and why they should stick with you is super important in your sequence!

Now let’s dive into the details of what you should actually put in each email.

Email 1: Obvs the freebie

Your new subscriber should always receive this email immediately after subscribing (or after they confirm if you’re using double opt-in).

So this email should of course include the link to download what they signed up for, but also make sure you’re reminding them why they want it.

You should also include a little bit about yourself. You don’t have to go into detail if you have an “about me” email in your sequence, but your subscribers are going to want to be reminded of who you are. You know damn well you’re not the only person hitting their inbox!

Throw in a call-to-action to get to know them better. Ask them a question related to your freebie and invite them to respond directly to your email with their answer.

Email 2: Value!

Give your new subscriber an opportunity for another quick win + remind them to download the freebie.

This is where you flex your expertise muscles. Show your new subscriber that you’re an expert in your field with a value-packed email giving them 1 or 2 action steps that will make a difference for them in their life or biz.

Remind them to download the freebie you sent a couple of days ago and invite them to “hit reply if you have any questions!”

This is also an excellent place to tease the offer you’ll be sending at the end of the email sequence. I usually add this as a “PS” so it doesn’t feel more like an afterthought rather than a sales pitch.

Email 3: About you.

Tell them who you are and why you’re awesome. Let them know exactly how you help your clients and even throw in some testimonials. This is also a great time to invite them to join you in your FB group, subscribe to your YouTube channel, follow you on Instagram, or wherever else you enjoy building a connection with your audience.

Email 4: MORE VALUE!

More wins for your subscriber makes them love you even more. This can be another email that positions you as the expert or more of an authenticity piece telling a story about how you overcame a problem your clients often deal with.

At the end of this email, invite them to sign up for a free mini session to further help them with this problem.

Email 5: Time to make an offer!

This is a great time to formally invite them to a free mini session, an upcoming workshop, or a challenge.

Writing sales content can be a little intimidating, but think about your sequence as a whole. If you were having a conversation with a potential client, this would be the last part of that conversation. You don’t need to be pushy or apply any pressure. You’re simply telling them how you can help them and how they will benefit from your help.

The most important part of this email (and really any piece of content) is the CTA. Make sure you’re being very clear on the next steps you want your new subscriber to take with you.

You should absolutely include testimonials in this email, especially those that show the transformation your past clients have experienced.

What to do if you have more than one freebie

If you have more than one freebie, all of your welcome sequences can be the same! You can swap out some of the content to be more relatable to the freebie and just update the offer mentions and last email if that changes. (If you’ve signed up to more than one of my freebies, you’ve likely seen my “about me” email a couple of times!).

Don’t forget that these are just guidelines!

This 5-email sequence is what has worked for me. You can really put whatever you want in your emails. You can have 3 emails or 10 and spaced out every 2 days or one per week. Whatever works for you is the right answer. Don’t be afraid to play around with it, but also don’t make changes too soon. Give your sequence some time to work before you decide it’s not working!

The only things that have to stay the same is your freebie delivery goes first and your offer goes last.
